Sam Smith Gets Called Out After Acceptance Speech

The Oscars this year were no disappointment and neither were the awkward moments that followed. The most notable awkward moment of the night goes to Stacey Dash and Chris Rock as he jokingly introduced her as:

“the Academy’s new director of minority outreach program.”

This was followed by silence as she did her part in the joke and walked off stage, leaving everyone confused and uncomfortable. However, the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite is not this only uncomfortable talk of the night.

Sam Smith found himself taking a lot of heat after his acceptance speech for Best Original Song. At first, his speech seemed simple and loving, dedicating his award to the LGBT community saying:

“I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar. If this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.”

This part of the speech seemed ill-informed but certainty meaning no disrespect. LGBT Oscar winners and supporters did not seem to find it this way. Dustin Lance Black, who won Best Original Screenplay for Milk in 2008, had a lot to say on Twitter following the ceremony.

“Hey Sam Smith, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé.” (Black is currently engaged to British Olympic diver Tom Daley)

“THE POINT: knowing our LGBTQ history is important. We stand on the shoulders of countless brave men and women who paved the way for us.”

Not only did he receive backlash from celebrities such as Black, but also has received harsh words from fans saying:

“Do your homework, Sam Smith. LOTS of openly gay people have won Oscars. Gaga would have known that. #Oscars.”

We all love Sam Smith but do you agree that he deserves such harsh backlash for a speech dedicated to the LGBT community?
