Kendrick Lamar At The Grammys!

American rapper Kendrick Lamar is currently riding high! The twenty-eight year old hip hop artist is nominated for no fewer than eleven Grammy Awards and his open-minded approach to his music was cited by David Bowie’s producer Tony Visconti as a source of inspiration for the late superstar’s final album Blackstar.

In an interview with Billboard magazine Lamar spoke about how much the nominations and the prospect of winning means to him:

‘It’s bigger than me. When we think about the Grammys, only Lauryn Hill and Outkast have won album of the year. This would be big for hip-hop culture at large.’

Lamar also gave an in-depth interview to the Awards own website,, in which he talked about his album To Pimp A Butterfly, which is nominated for both Album Of The Year and Rap Album Of The Year:

‘The title grasped the entire concept of the record. [I wanted to] break down the idea of being pimped in the industry, in the community and out of all the knowledge that you thought you had known, then discovering new life and wanting to share it.’

The multiple nominee also revealed why the much-talked about collaboration with Prince on the album track Complexion (A Zulu Love) failed to materialise:

‘Prince heard the record, loved the record and the concept of the record got us to talking. We got to a point where we were just talking in the studio and the more time that passed we realized we weren’t recording anything. We just ran out of time, it’s as simple as that.’

The Grammy Awards ceremony takes place next Monday (15th February) and while Michael Jackson holds the most nomination in one night with twelve, of which he won eight in 1984, Lamar is unequivocal about how many of his eleven he would like to win;

‘I want to win them all.’

Well they do say aim high!
